Oakland Division I Men’s Hockey maintained their undefeated start to the season Saturday night, making quick work of University of Michigan-Dearborn by defeating them, 6-1.

Six different players scored goals for Oakland during the game, with Matt Toter in goal for the night. Toter allowed one UM-Dearborn goal late in the third, preventing the team from their first shutout victory but defensively securing the win for the Golden Grizzlies.

“I saw a lot of really good things about the team and I also saw some really bad play,” Head Coach Jeremy Bachusz said last week about Oakland’s defense after sweeping Kent State. “These are some things we need to work on this week in practice. Tighten up a little bit defensively and try to simplify our game a little bit. We tried to do too much this weekend and it was a little bit frustrating.”

Oakland seemed to be firing on all cylinders Saturday, as they dominated on all sides of the ice.

Freshman Forward Richard Hubscher scored his second goal of the season to put the Grizzlies up early in the first. Forwards Billy Balent and Frank Matyok followed, adding two goals to end the first period 3-0.

Defenseman Dustin Hopfner kicked the second period into high gear, scoring the Grizzlies fourth goal within the first three minutes of the period. Defenseman Ian Jacobs quickly followed that goal with one of his own, putting Oakland up 5-0.

Oakland scored their final goal when forward Anthony Coles sunk his first of the season late in the third period. Despite strong defensive play, Toter allowed one goal in the final minutes of play, ending any chance of the team’s first shutout of the year.

The Golden Grizzlies have outscored their opponents 21-7 in just the first three games of the season.

Oakland, who is currently ranked at the top in the GLCHL standings, sits at #4 in the first ACHA Men’s Division I top 25 polls. Released Friday, the Golden Grizzlies, ranked fifth in preseason polls, received one first place vote and currently sit one spot ahead of defending national champions, Delaware. Oakland’s record is now 3-0-0.

Florida Gulf Coast hosts Oakland next weekend, as the Grizzlies travel south for the Friday and Saturday games. The next home game for Oakland is against Eastern Michigan on Oct. 12 at the ONYX Ice Arena in Rochester, Mich.
